Das Schwarze Auge Cover by JonHodgson Das Schwarze Auge Cover by JonHodgson
(C)2008 Jon Hodgson

This is a cover I did recently for German rpg publisher Ulisses Spiele, for their flagship fantasy game DSA, which is huge in Germany.

They were inspired by my Dragon Warriors cover, and wanted something along similar lines, though with a distinct feel.

This is ArtRage, Painter and Photoshop.

there are probably lots of good stuff that's in Europe that we here in America don't get a chance to experience

That's a good one for the albums

I really like the gritty realistic look to this. The armor, the weapons, the people. They're all very much what you would actually expect from a group of people from this era. I also really like the expressions and just the faces of them too. Overall, just a really good picture.

Great paintings!
It would be great if you could enrich with your paintings the novel "Witcher" by Andrzej Sapkowski - your paintings fits in 100% the atmosphere of his novels.

Argh, sorry...
When I saw your profile, I realized, you're not german. xD
I thought so, because of DSA:

The girl in green.. is it the same on, who is shown on the cover of the "game-master-help-book"?

Ah very good...yes the winged helemt and the big moustaches were iconic for the old covers...nice, very nice one :D

A lot of mood in this piece. Very atmospheric, and yes, the viking skull in the front is amusing. Plus, the picture just looks cold with the colors you used. It certainly gives that feeling of being away from the sun and all things good and bright.

One little thing bothers me, though. The woman in the front is wearing green, but everyone else is wearing blue or gray so they blend in. Is she intended to be the focus? Or is it just me?

I don't know. Still a very cool pic.

Most excellent, always liked your painterly style, works extremely well with these high fantasy settings . . . .

The cold colour palette really evokes that deep, subterranean setting, far away from the reaches of the sun . . . .

It's a very good picture - but I am afraid I have to tell you - as someone who has a lot experience with Das Schwarze Auge - I did not recognize this as DSA Art - save the little Skrull with Helmet - it's very D&D.

Maybe this is a good thing, maybe that is intended to be that way since times change - but I guess there are a lot of fans that won't like that.

Still it is good work on your part.

You're right - I believe the publishers are looking to reflect a new look for DSA. Whether or not the fans like it is out of my control! I followed my brief and did the best I could. :)
B3hold3r Featured By Owner Feb 18, 2009
The fans already found it. And they like it.

Hi Jon,
nice work. A german fan found it on 18. Feb via Deviantart.
DSA has a few thousand customers and a community
The reaction was very positive.
Probably your work will be cover of a dungeon-book. Thats no normal publication for that system, but rather a nostalgic special the fans looking forward to.
refined regards

Great work ... can't wait until I see it on one of the DSA-books :D
Rainblossom Featured By Owner Jan 15, 2009
I'm just curious, but is there any particular reason why the long-dead viking warrior skull by the knight's feet still has its lovely blond hair and mustaches? :?

Amazing work, as always.
JonHodgson Featured By Owner Jan 16, 2009  Professional Digital Artist
Aye, the client asked for that. In older incarnations of DSA they used a lot of Wagnerean style warriors with big moustaches and winged helmets and so on. In this instance one such fellow is dead dead dead. I believe it is symbolic of a new direction the game is taking, but don't quote me on that!
Mondbuchstaben Featured By Owner Feb 19, 2009
You are right. The first publisher of DSA was a mainstream board game publisher with no idea about RPGs and the fantasy genre. The artist they hired for doing the covers during the formative years of the game was Ugurcan Yüce whose idea of "fantasy" apparently was "Vikings!"
He had put this "Wagnerian viking" on every cover whether it was set on a long boat or in the desert.
But the viking became history when the licence went to another publisher (who happened to be the editorial team that invented DSA and had provided the content from day one).

Ulisses is the third publisher to hold the DSA licence.

The viking skull is a nice nod to the past akin to the one you included in the (equally gorgeous) Dragon Warriors cover!

Good to know that Asterix didn't meet his end in some dark dungeon. ;)
JonHodgson Featured By Owner Jan 21, 2009  Professional Digital Artist
I beleive in the end Obelix devoured him, mistaking him for a slab of wild boar.

This looks great! The cooler tones of the whole painting is really setting off those warm, bright faces. I'd really like to see this one in print.

The guys at Ulisses-Spiele are really great to work for too. I always love hearing from Patric. Lots of support, creative freedom... nothing but good things to say about those guys.

Lovely work as usual!

the two men in back and the mag like person seem scared / cautious but the ranger woman looks confident and sure of herself. I love how I can read into the image a story of what is going on. It is a wonderful image.
