Gnome Warren by JonHodgson Gnome Warren by JonHodgson
(C)2008 Eden/Hachette, from "Beasts and Beings". All Rights Reserved.

An illustration for the part-work "Beasts and Beings". A funky wee gnome cottage and workshop under the ground. I had a lot of fun painting this one!

Great underground Gnome Home painting with nice detailing. Always cool to see what's going on underneath the surface.

Close to the books by Portriviet, tho they contradict each other slightly.

This is such a beautiful picture! I love the happy feeling in it ... it feels so peaceful and yet it appears the gnomes are a busy race and always have work to do even if they don't always do it. :)  Anyway, if it's possible, I'd love to use this picture for a non-profit youtube video I'm doing. I'd of course give you credit and link back to your page. If not, though, that is completely fine. I just thought I'd ask. Thanks! :D

I like your picture but why would gnomes live under ground?

I find myself wondering if gnomes and hobbits have waged wars over choice terrain for building their underground housing.

I love how it's a cross-section but at the same time it somehow throws the viewer right into the scene with the colours and the details. :D

Do the gnomes take off their hats moving from room to room?

I want to be a gnome! And not just for the hat! :P

Amazing. :D

I'm going to be an annoying little person (If I wasn't annoying, I could be a gnome!) and say: Why isn't there smoke coming out from the tiny chimney?

Ok, now I can go and die...

an inviting view to a hidden world! my favorite aspects of this piece are the hints of other, unseen parts of the warren -- the doors and passages which lead away from what we can observe here. this invokes the mind's eye. the viewer instinctively begins to wonder just where those winding ways might lead.

Me too! I'm currently sketching out a much bigger version, which will be populated by some art buddies, a chamber each. Which should be fun if I can find enough time!

Ha ha ha ha ha, now that is really funny and wonderful. Yes, like an ant farm, or a doll house, the perspective is done so cleverly that viewing the image makes me feel all large and bloated and looking in at some small beings. Nice!
