Sleeping Gods by JonHodgson Sleeping Gods by JonHodgson
(c)2008 Jon Hodgson and Magnum Opus Press

This is the cover art to a forthcomign supplement for the reissue of the Dragon Warriors rpg from Magnum Opus Press. A game I really love and played a lot as a kid. Probably one of my core formative influences in fact, with its overtones of myth and legend.

Painter 9.5, Photoshop CS2, Wacom Intuous 3, PowerMac G5, black coffee, Led Zeppelin.
Thanks for looking!

I can't possibly comment on all of the illustrations I've just favorited, so I'll take this opportunity to say that your work is stellar and I'm saving them for inspiration as well as to look at many times in the future.

That's what you get if you steal. :aww:

Your technique and this atmosphere are just perfect with each other.

Whoever said, "let sleeping dogs lie" had the word 'dogs' backwards.

Thanks Ben! I've had a few comments as to the MacBridey-ness of this one. Which I'm always pleased with. Not sure if I should be, but I am! :)

Glad you like the colours - it started of much brighter, but the client asked for a push towards more night time colours. Which I was happy to do, and I think it came out much better as a result of the change. I used a lot of low opacity gradients over the top of the original colours and a bit of hue adjustment to redress the palette towards blues, and I think that brought a nice soft feel to it.

Blimey! Blah blah blah! :)

love it. The classic central composition does its job well.
an original way to depict a tale old as time. I like how the grave robber didn't see it coming until it was to late, rather then the clichee picture of him being frightened by a ghost. He looks sort of disbelieving.
One question: who or what did you have in mind with him armour and clothing? I can't quite pinpoint them to any historical or fictional setting.

The ghost/wight/wraith feller is a mixture of things. Saxon, with the Sutton Hoo helmet there, he has torcs and arm rings which are "celtic" (for want of a better term). But then the grave goods at Sutton Hoo do show a healthy mix of different cultures so I felt that was ok to mix it up.

The robber is really quite fantastical, but with early medieval overtones. His helmet is a bit later.

That kind of not-quite-historical feel really suits the game, which is heavily based in a lot of European folklore and history, but is still fantasy.
Thanks again!
