Three members of the Ninja Mountain freelance artist group [link] sat down this week to record an hour of freelancer chat.

Jeremy McHugh (White Wolf, Bucephalus Games), Patrick McEvoy (Sony, Marvel) and Jon Hodgson (WotC, Paizo) spilled their brainpans all over the internetz, discussing such seminal topics as what they did wrong when they started out as freelance artists, their first gigs, advice for fantasy artists trying to survive a fine art art school program.

Thusly we present for your listening pleasure The Ninja Mountain Podcast, Episode One:  [link]

This link takes you to the Ninja Mountain Scrolls, our blog where you check out the episode or subscribe via a number of podcast aggregators.

Enjoy!
So I was sifting through some old work on Imageshack, and found this:

[link]

Its a (somewhat limited) walkthrough of my process for Dragon Rein.  That one wasn't a painting I deliberately saved sequential steps for, so it jumps about a bit.

I also found this:

DD on Dragon Reign...

Wed Jan 7, 2009, 11:25 AM
Um...wow?

Just a quick note to say a huge thank you to all the people who have viewed, commented and faved "Dragon Reign Wallpaper" [link] since it was awarded a DD today.

I'm simply overwhelmed by the response its getting, all the more because its an older piece of work!  Everyone is very kind.

There's just no way I will get through the 1100 plus messages I have just now, so this will have to do for now. I'll try to answer any posted questions, and a selection of comments as best I can!

Thank you.

Illodeli.com

Wed Nov 5, 2008, 5:01 AM

Illodeli.com is a new online store which offers publishers the chance to buy artwork for their publications and immediately download it at print resolution.

Illodeli.com features the work of industry illustrators Scotty Purdy, Andy Hepworth, Scott Neil and Jon Hodgson.

We have a range of work from full colour covers right down to black and white spot art, all at great prices, and unavailable anywhere else.

Illodeli.com is launching in public beta mode, so currently our catalogue is a small selection of work, with plans for expansion on the immediate horizon. Regular updates are also in the pipeline, so check back often or sign up for our newsletter.

Our licenses are extremely simple. Each purchase allows the non-exclusive single use within one product. This is the barest baseline of use we could come up with, which allows us to give the cheapest possible price. Our filler and spot art is sold under a wider license which allows reuse within one product. Which seemed only fair!

Hi All!
My first copy of the 2008 Jon Hodgson Book, a selection of images I have made this last 12 months, arrived last week from Lulu.  The quality is far better than I had let myself anticipate and I'm extremely chuffed!  So today the book goes live for public sale!  The book is 20 pages of glossy colour artwork, in a 9x7 format.  Its a slim volume, but all killer, no filler.  I'm seriously chuffed with how this came out, and there will be more titles forthcoming in the near future. You can find it at the store here:[link]  Or direct link here: [link]  There's preview of the book on its lulu page.

Also available is Designoids 2008, a slightly more niche product - 37 pages of artwork from my design/photo/graphics line.  You can preview that title here:

Hey All!

So then, what's been going on since I last posted on my Devious Journal?

Well now, I haven't had much art to upload, though that has changed recently with the launch of the Beasts and Beings website: [link]

Beasts and Beings is a collectible partwork, which comes with a figurine of a prominent mythical beast (or being presumably), and a magazine which covers all kinds of mythical and legendary creatures. Part One is out, part two can't be far behind.  My work starts in part 6 or 7, but you can see some of my stuff on the downloads page.  I'll upload some of those to my gallery soon.

In other news I'm in negotiation to write an art book, which is very exciting. More news as I have it!

Last week I uploaded page 2 [link] my gallery - its the second page from a very long running project me and a model-making friend have been sporadically working on for the last ten years or so.  The image is going to be featured along with some other pages and posters from the project on the Beeb in a few months time. Can't really say too much about that, so don't go quizzing me about it! :)

Some friends and I have started a group blog called The MeeeMooo. We're a motley assortment of designers, illustrators, gallery painters, art historians, musicians and comic artists.  Check it out and book mark it! There's usually something new a couple of times a week:  [link]

Lastly and kind of off topic, but I had a very poor couple of weeks personally, so to cheer myself up I broke out the credit card and bought myself an ipod touch.  Its absolutely brilliant, and the best couple of hundred quid I've spent in a long time. Having wireless intarwebz in the house means I can carry my various email accounts and blogs around in my pocket, and check how things are on teh webz without squirrelling myself away in the office. How sociable!  Being able to check email if I'm out of the house is also a real boon.  Great stuff.  Mind you its not like I really needed much encouragement to hand over another wad of cash to Apple...

Anyway, that's quite enough out of me. Thanks for all the adds and faves of late - I haven't been able to respond as personally as I would like, but rest assured they are all very much appreciated.

Hey!
Yesterday I submitted the cover I painted earlier in the year for the new edition of "Dragon Warriors".  Its a very British roleplaying game from the 80s, originally published as a series of paperback books.

It was great to get the chance to work on this one, since Dragon Warriors was the game I played the most as a kid, and will always be my favourite rpg.  I also got to do a whole load of black and whites too.

The cover piece is featured in the Ilex Press/Collins book "Fantasy Art Now" by Martin McKenna. Another great honour, as the book features some really great work.

Hey Hey gentle readers of DA,
Today I uploaded a new painting, called Snakeskin Pass.  Its the "swarthy brother" to my misty grey dragon painting of last week. I said that just because I like the idea of a painting having a "swarthy brother". I'm sorry. ;)

You can check it out here: [link]

NB: I will get this on sale as a print once I've concluded a rights deal to the piece.

So I uploaded a new piece - "Roll for Initiative".  I painted this one this week whilst waiting on some commission paperwork to finally arrive, and it was really ncie to get a chance to flex my art muscles just for myself, and take all the creative decisions myself.

I love working as part of a team, with an art director helping me achieve the desired result for the product, and its a thrill to see things come together in a finished book or game. But doing stuff just for myself is a rare treat, so I grabbed it in both my hot little hands and tried to make something to show off in the ole folio.

If I get any more time to myself (which if course is a mixed blessing since painting for actual income is important too!) I plan to carry on a little series of "classic fantasy" images. I have a piece made for a client showing a classic party, which is under wraps until the publisher releases the image, which is the first image, now this new dragon encounter image continues the theme.

The next one I think will be an actual fight, painted large and in unprecedented detail for me. Cross your fingers I get some time. Or if you'd prefer cross your fingers that I'm far too busy with commissions to ever get round to it. I'm happy either way! :)
