This was another of those tricky pictorial maps I get to make for The One Ring roleplaying game. We'd established the look of the location in this image: 
It's always fun and a challenge to convert that single view point into a useable map for players of the game.
It's always fun and a challenge to convert that single view point into a useable map for players of the game.Rivendell is also a really frustrating place to draw or paint, since in my imagination it looks a lot of different ways, and it hurts to have to pin it down to a single set of buildings with a consistent look. Such is gaming illustration!
In the book this one had an inset 2d map at the bottom right hand side, so the work is a little looser there than otherwise it'd be.

As much as I love the intricate art deco look of Peter Jackson's Rivendell, this picture of "the least homely house" is probably closer to the image in Tolkien's mind's eye.
